About AFC Champions League (ACL)

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is the governing body of Asian football and one of the six Confederations making up FIFA. The current President of AFC is Mohamed Bin Hammam, who is from Qatar, and has been the President since 2002.

A bold new era in Asian Club football began in 2002 with the launch of the AFC Champions League (ACL). It is Asia’s premier club competition and offers clubs from across Asia the chance to claim a place in the FIFA Club World Cup. The format of the competition was revised in 2009 to increase the number of teams competing to 32.

The competition runs annually from March to November. 32 teams are entered for the Group Stage and are separated into 8 groups of 4 on a regional basis – four groups from West, Central & South Asia and four from ASEAN, Australia and East Asia.

8 groups play home & away in a league format. Winning team and Runners-up from each group progress to the Round of 16 stage.
